D.I.Y. beauty: beauty on a budget (part 3)
On June 30th I had the opportunity to attend the wedding of a fellow Christian couple here in my city. The pics above showcase what I wore to that special occasion and also how I wore my make up. After posting it on my Facebook page and on the hair forum I'm a member of, I received a few compliments, followed by some questions regarding my skin care routine, so I decided to make a blog post about it.
The ladies specifically complimented me on how white my eye whites are and how beautiful my skin looks. Now granted, my skin is not perfect by far and my eye whites are not white enough for my taste. But still, I'm happy with the results I've achieved so far, which were of course...intentional.
One day I was fawning over Maisha Harris' eye whites on her blog and she explained that she really does very little to achieve them. She just tries to get her zzz's in and that's about it. Upon doing some further research, some sources were saying that milk thistle also helps with brightening up the eyes. So I tried it for a while, but was never disciplined enough to obtain the results I was seeking after.
Fast forward to 2018 and what I've basically done is just clean up my entire diet, mostly for health related reasons actually. So here are some of the things I do, that I believe have contributed to the results seen above (which by no means are perfect, but need further tweaking):
- Barely ever drink sodas, I drink water for the most part. I always carry a small bottle of water with me everywhere I go. This forces me to actually drink up.
- Veered from meat laden meals as my staple food, to fruits and vegetables. I pretty much always have fruits for breakfast and vegetables for lunch and dinner. Meat has become a luxury of sorts.
- Speaking of breakfast: I only have breakfast at 10am and NEVER eat past midnight.
- Some mornings, I add a teaspoon of Chlorophyll to my tall glass of water and drink it up. Chlorophyll is the liquid that plants produce, which gives them oxygen if my mind serves me right. A lady informed me that it also aides against blemishes and dark spots.
- I've been sleeping on a silk pillow case for the longest.
- African Black Soap (from Ghana) and Cerasee soap (from the Carribeans) have really helped me with my skin. I no longer use them, because I was advised not to when I attended the Natural Hair Academy in Paris on June 9th. So now I just use plain water and keep it moving. Since my skin doesn't do too bad during summer, it's OK for now. Don't know how things will go when winter will start lurking. Yikes!
- Finally, I fast once a week because I am a faith based person. I still drink water though...for now anyway.
BONUS: The only 'moisturizer' I use on my facial skin is coconut oil, nothing else. There was a product I started using during winter, when I broke out severely (will be sure to post pictures), but I am not currently using it. As I mentioned, will see about adjusting my skin regimen when winter comes around the corner.
